Women’s Cross Country Wins Vanderbilt Invite

9/17/2005

Nashville, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s team won their second meet of the season at the Vanderbilt Invitational.

The Commodores took first place with an impressive 22 points followed by Lipscomb University and Emory University. The Vanderbilt freshmen competed separately to place fourth with 80 points.

Leading the 5k course were Erika Schneble, Amy Huss and Julie Eckerly who were the first to cross the line with times of 18:13, 18:17 and 18:31 respectively. Schneble’s time earns her the third best time in Vanderbilt history to be run at the challenging Vaughn’s Gap course.

“The weather was a huge factor and contributed to the fast times,” Coach Jim Spivey said, “Our top three runners had an incredible race.”

Rounding out the top five Vanderbilt runners were Shannon Capps (19:28 — 10th) and Whitney Thurman (19:31 — 12th). Carmen Mims led the Vandy Freshmen team (19:21).

“I was encouraged by the way our girls ran in packs. I was very pleased with Carmen’s race. Her efforts in practice translated into her race today. Freshman Ashley Anderson (19:43) also stepped up and competed well today. This race has showed how everyone’s hard work over the summer is paying off.”

The Commodores will compete next at the Notre Dame Invitational on September 29th.
