Women’s Cross Country Exceeds Expectations At Notre Dame 10/4/2003 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Women’s Cross Country team placed fifth at the Notre Dame Invitational held today in South Bend, IN. Going into the meet, Coach Spivey’s goal was to finish in the top 10, with under 200 points. The Commodores fifth place, 163 point finish exceeded all expectations. Vanderbilt easily surpassed their 16th place, 420 point finish from last year’s Notre Dame Invitational. Notre Dame, ranked second in the nation, won the meet with 73 points, and Notre Dame sophomore Molly Huddle (17:12) took home individual honors on the 5K course. The Commodores were led once again by freshman Ashleigh Wetzel (17:54, 13th), sophomore Erika Schneble (18:00, 22nd), and freshman Debbie Huss (18:10, 29th). Also scoring for Vanderbilt were sophomore Caitlin Shannon (18:32, 46th), and freshman Amy Huss (18:38, 54th). Nadiyah Humber (18:55, 73rd), Lauren Pence (19:02, 83rd), and Jocelyn Theriault (19:23, 105th) also finished the race for the Commodores. All of Vanderbilt’s runners set new season bests at this meet. This was the Commodores first chance to see where they stood against some of the nation’s top teams, and Vanderbilt responded well to this challenge. Vanderbilt also beat Missisissippi State (258, 10th), and continues to be undefeated against SEC competition this season.
