Women’s Cross Country Captures Belmont Invite Win 9/2/2005 The Vanderbilt women’s cross country team took first place in the Belmont Invitational Friday night, opening the 2005 season by defeating SEC rivals Tennessee and Mississippi State. The Commodores were led by junior Erika Schneble, who placed fourth overall with a time of 14:30. “It felt good to be out there running,” Schneble said. “It’s good to get the season rolling.” Junior Amy Huss joined Schneble at the line, finishing fifth overall with a time of 14:31. “The team is right on schedule,” VU Head Coach Jim Spivey said. “They performed about like I expected. There were some great things out there today, and it looks like we’ll continue our practice schedule just as we planned.” Brittany Sizer (14:42) and Julie Eckerly (14:43) took 10th and 11th place in the contest while Ashleigh Wetzel (15:04) rounded off the top five for the Commodores finishing 15th overall. UT boasted two runners in the top five, including first place finisher Sarah Bowman (14:09) and third place finisher Leah Soro (14:28). Julia Hicks of Alabama finished second overall with a time of 14:14. Vanderbilt’s next contest is in two weeks when they will host the Commodore Classic at Nashville’s Percy Warner Park on Saturday, Sept. 17. |
