Women’s Basketball On the Road This Week

12/19/2005

Melanie Balcomb

The No. 19/21 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team will play its final two non-conference games away from the Music City, travelling to face No. 6 North Carolina (in Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and La Salle (in Philadelphia, Pa.).

The Commodores (8-2), winners of three straight, last played on Dec. 10, defeating Miami University, 82-50, at Memorial Gymnasium. North Carolina (10-0) is coming off a 98-41 victory on Saturday over Coastal Carolina, while La Salle (3-4) plays host to Villanova on Tuesday prior to a Thursday meeting with Vanderbilt.

Tuesday’s game marks the fourth all-time meeting between the Commodores and Tar Heels. All four games have taken place on neutral courts, including a pair of matchups in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Overall, Vanderbilt is 2-1 against North Carolina.

The Dores have never faced La Salle, but VU Head Coach Melanie Balcomb, formerly at Xavier, is familiar with the Atlantic-10 foe. Balcomb compiled a 7-6 record against La Salle during seven seasons with the Musketeers.

Vanderbilt will take an eight-day holiday break following Thursday’s game, returning to action on Dec. 30 to play host to William & Mary.
