Auburn, Ala. – Senior Christa Reed earned her 1,000th career point with a team-best 15 points and Autumn Newby added 11 rebounds but the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team’s (6-20, 2-10 SEC) second-half comeback fell just short in a road loss to Auburn (13-11, 4-8 SEC) on Monday night.

First Quarter: Auburn 20, Vanderbilt 12
Vanderbilt jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with just two minutes off the clock on the strength of an early triple from Christa Reed and an old-fashioned three-point play from Autumn Newby. Auburn got themselves back in the ballgame with eight consecutive points from Tiffany Lewis, including two three-pointers, to tie the game at 10 at the 4:48 mark. Kayla Overbeck returned the lead to the Commodores with a layup at the 4:07 mark but 10 unanswered points gave Auburn the lead at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter: Auburn 41, Vanderbilt 24
The Commodores struggled with Auburn’s press in the second quarter and saw the Tigers use a 17-0 run, started in the first quarter, to pull ahead 27-12 at the 7:56 mark, keeping Vanderbilt out of the scorebook for nearly 10 minutes dating back to the first quarter. A layup from Newby ended the run but Auburn’s press forced the Commodores into 15 first-half turnovers. Auburn scored 18 points off those miscues to take a large halftime lead.
Third Quarter: Auburn 49, Vanderbilt 43
Vanderbilt came out of the locker room and began to chip away at the Auburn lead with three straight triples, including back-to-back from Christa Reed, to cut Auburn’s once 20-point lead to single digits at the 7:32 mark. Vanderbilt also picked things up on the defensive end by limiting Auburn to just eight points in the third quarter and a mere two field goals. Reed, who scored her 1,000th career point during the third quarter, led the way with eight points in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Auburn 63, Vanderbilt 60
Auburn used a 5-0 spurt to take a 54-43 lead, which forced White to call a timeout, but five straight points from Kayla Overbeck cut the Auburn lead to 55-48 with under three minutes remaining. Vanderbilt got a stop on the defensive end and with two triples from Cierra Walker and Erin Whalen cut the Auburn lead to two points, 58-56, with less than a minute remaining. The teams traded foul shots late and with six seconds left a steal from Whalen gave the Commodores a chance at the win but Auburn forced a turnover and converted at the free throw line to keep the Dores from the comeback.
Inside the Lane
-Kayla Overbeck reached double figures for the fifth straight game with 11 points.
-Christa Reed joined the 1,000-point club with 15 points. She needed just eight points entering tonight’s game to reach the milestone. She is the Commodores’ 38th member of the 1,000-point club.
-Autumn Newby recorded her fifth game with double-figure rebounds with 11.
-Christa Reed reached double figures for the seventh time in the last eight outings.
