Women Golfers to LSU 3/16/2005 BATON ROUGE — Improving its chances for a bid to the NCAA East Regional is one of the goals for the Vanderbilt women’s golf team as it heads to the LSU/Cleveland Classic this weekend. “Right now we are probably considered a bubble team for post-season play,” says Head Coach Martha Richards Freitag. “It would help our cause to play well; we need to beat as many teams as we possibly can during the next few weeks.” The Commodores are coming off a week of spring break, one in which the flu virus went through just about the entire roster. While everyone has recovered from the flu, Liebelei Lawrence is nursing a sore back and will be held out of this weekend’s competition as a precaution. Vanderbilt will travel sophomores Chris Brady and Kristen Svicarovich and freshmen Julie Bartholomew, Devon Unkeless and Helen-Rose Richards. “We are obviously a very young team,” Freitag says, “and at times we have struggled but I am enjoying this enthusiastic team. They have good personalities and are fun to work with. It is rewarding to watch their improvements. We are getting better even if it is not always evident.” The LSU/Cleveland field includes Alabama, Augusta State, Birmingham Southern, College of Charleston, James Madison, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, UNC-Wilmington, Tulane and Vanderbilt. The tournament will be played Friday through Sunday over the par 72, 6,269 yard University Club. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com and daily results will be available on LSUsports.net. |
