Vanderbilt’s Erin Whalen was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday when the conference announced its weekly honors.
Whalen, a 6-1 guard/forward from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 17 points per game and shot 59 percent from the floor — making 16-of-27 shots — during Vanderbilt’s three games this week. The Commodores won all three games, and have now won seven straight overall.
Whalen scored 10 points and had a team-high four assists on Monday night in Vanderbilt’s 74-63 win over Tulane at Memorial Gym.
Whalen began her current three-game surge by scoring 19 points in the Commodores’ victory over Air Force on Dec. 2 in the opening round of the Air Force Classic. She followed that up with a 12-point, four-rebound performance in VU’s win over SIUE in the championship game on Dec. 3. Whalen was named to the Classic’s all-tournament team after those two impressive showings.
For the season, Whalen has seen action in eight games, and is averaging 8.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. She is shooting 55 percent from the floor and 44 percent from 3-point range.
Vanderbilt, off to an 8-1 start in Stephanie White’s first season at the helm, visits ETSU on Thursday night.
