DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Senior Chris Brady and sophomore Jacqui Concolino both carded a 3-over-par 75 to tie for 22nd place and help position Vanderbilt into a tie for seventh after the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course (Par 72, 6,351 yards).
The Commodores combined for a 15-over par 303 after battling weather conditions that changed from calm to gusting winds topping out at 25 miles per hour during their round. Vanderbilt enters Wednesday tied with four other teams – UCLA, Georgia, Purdue and UC Irvine — eight shots behind leader Southern California (295).
UC Irvine’s Selanee Henderson grabbed the early position atop the individual leaderboard with a 3-under 69.
“We played well on a lot of holes today,” head coach Martha Richards said. “Attempts at birdies were hard to come by because it was difficult to get the ball close to the hole in this wind. When it’s like this, you just try to minimize the big numbers and we were able to do that for the most part.”
After early missteps, Brady and Concolino played better as the weather conditions worsened. Brady was 3-over on the front nine while Concolino posted a 4-over 40 before the turn. However, both steadied their play and were a combined 1-under on the back nine. Brady had one birdie on the back side while Concolino recorded two.
“It’s ironic, but I was missing some putts when the wind was calm,” Brady said. “When it picked up on the back nine, I seemed to be making some positive progress. I just couldn’t get any scores under par.”
“Jacqui got off to a slow start but was able to play better on the back nine,” Richards said. “Chris was consistent and solid most of the day. Those two were able to hold their rounds together against the weather.”
Senior Kristen Svicarovich was at even par through 12 holes before a triple bogey on No. 13 pushed her to 3-over. She ended the day with a 4-over 76 to tie for 39th place.
Junior Liebelei Lawrence is tied for 53rd place after posting a 5-over 77. She shot even par on the front nine before a string of three consecutive bogeys to start the back side and a double bogey on No. 17 dropped her in the standings.
Freshman Brooke Goodwin is tied for 95th place after an 8-over 80. Most of her struggles came on the back nine were she ended 6-over.
Vanderbilt will begin second round play Wednesday from the 10th hole at 12:10 p.m. The Commodores again will be grouped with North Carolina and BYU.
