WEST POINT, Miss. — A trio of Vanderbilt players are tied for 13th place after first round action Friday at the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Old Waverly Golf Club.

Junior Liebelei Lawrence, sophomore Jacqui Concolino and freshman Brooke Goodwin each shot a 1-over par 73 during the opening round of the tournament and enter Saturday six strokes behind tournament leader Garrett Phillips of Georgia. Phillips carded a 5-under par 67.

Vanderbilt’s 8-over par 296 is tied with Florida and Arkansas for sixth place. Georgia leads the team standings after posting a 3-over par 285.

Concolino surged back from a slow start with four birdies on the final seven holes. Lawrence also enjoyed a rally on the back nine, posting three consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 through 15. Goodwin was Vanderbilt’s most consistent performer on the day, carding pars on 15 holes to go along with one birdie.

“Jacqui stopped trying to set up perfectly for each shot and just played by feel,” Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards said. “Liebelei had some success, got into a bubble and just focused on what to do on her next shot. Brooke was solid and steady all day. You can’t ask for anything more.”

Senior Kristen Svicarovich is tied for 40th place after a 5-over par 77. Senior Chris Brady is tied for 56th position after a 10-over par 82.

“We were a little nervous at the start, but once we decided to let go we were able to play some golf,” Richards said. “Overall, I’m pleased with our composure. The big thing for us is to eliminate some big scores and roll in a few more putts.”

Second round play begins Saturday at 8: 30 a.m. CT. Vanderbilt will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 9:20 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available throughout the tournament at www.golfstat.com.
