CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to defend their 2006 championship this weekend at the Tar Heel Invitational.
The 16th-ranked Commodores and 17 other teams will play at UNC Finley Golf Course, which features a par 72, 6,285-yard layout. Tee times begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday with teams starting off both the #1 and #10 tees. There will be a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. The field of 18 teams includes 12 of the top 30 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. In addition to host North Carolina, which is ranked 26th, the field includes Duke (#2), Auburn (#7), Oklahoma State (#8), Georgia (#11), Tennessee (#12), Texas (#14), Vanderbilt (#16), Wake Forest (#18), East Carolina (#20), Florida State (#28), South Carolina (#29), Kentucky (#33), N.C. State (#34), Texas A&M (#40), College of Charleston, Tulsa and Virginia.
The Commodores are coming off of a fifth-place finish at the Margaret Branch NCAA Preview at the University of New Mexico, where senior Liebelei Lawrence led Vanderbilt with her best career finish. Lawrence finished in fourth place and ended the tournament with only one bogey and ten birdies in route to a nine-under, 210 (71-70-69).
Last year at the Tar Hell Invitational, Vanderbilt shot a 10-over par 298 and posted three Commodores among the top 10 finishers to win the Lady Tar Heel Invitational. The Commodores (301+294+298=893) grabbed the tournament lead on Friday and maintained their advantage throughout the competition, winning the event in wire-to-wire fashion. Vanderbilt held off second-place Virginia (303+301+294=898) by five strokes and two-time defending national champion Duke (303+304+292=899) by six strokes. The tournament field included 11 squads ranked in the Golfweek magazine poll.
Competing at the tournament this season for the Commodores is Lawrence, junior Jacqui Concolino, sophomore Brooke Goodwin, freshman Megan Grehan, and senior Julie Bartholomew.
