NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s golf team has received a number nine seed at the NCAA East Regional and is scheduled to compete at the three-day 54-hole event at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens on May 8-10, the NCAA announced on Monday.
The Commodores are one of 21 teams competing at the regional. Sixty-three teams make up the tournament’s overall field with Sacramento State hosting the West Regional in Lincoln, Calif., Texas hosting the Central Regional in Austin, Texas, and the University of Georgia hosting the East Regional in Athens, Ga.
The top eight teams from each site, as well as the top two individual performers not from advancing squads, move on to compete at the NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N.M., May 20-23.
Duke is the top seed at the East regional, followed by Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Virginia, and New Mexico.
“It’s a brand new season and it comes down to one tournament,” said head coach Greg Allen, who, in his first season with the team, has directed Vanderbilt to his first NCAA regional as Commodore coach. Vanderbilt has made the NCAA regional field for nine consecutive years. “We’re excited and ready to get started. We’re ready to play some good golf.”
“We played this golf course this spring, so we’ll be familiar with our surroundings,” Allen said. “This certainly is what it’s all about. People remember you for what you do at the NCAA regional and the NCAA Championship.”
“It’s exciting we made it, and we’ve played the course very recently, so we know what to expect from the golf course,” said senior Liebelei Lawrence, who will be making her fourth appearance at an NCAA regional. “We’re going to try and forget the spring season as quickly as possible because we all know the most important part of our season is ahead of us.”
The Commodores finished sixth as a team at the 2007 NCAA Central Regional, and then-sophomore Jacqui Concolino became the first Vanderbilt women’s golfer to capture medalist honors at a regional. Vanderbilt then went on to finish sixth overall at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
The five Commodores competing at the event will be senior Liebelei Lawrence, juniors Jacqui Concolino and Amber Lundskog, sophomore Brooke Goodwin, and freshman Megan Grehan.
