The Vanderbilt women’s golf team tied for the low round of the day on Tuesday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational with a second-round 11-under par, 277, which placed them in sixth at the rain-shortened 36-hole event. Junior Alexandra Farnsworth was the team’s best finisher, ending the tournament in a tie for third with a seven-under, 137 (67-70) total.

Farnsworth’s finish was the second-best of her career, and her second ever top-five finish, with the other coming at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in the spring of 2016 (T-2). The junior from Nashville, who tied with Jakeishya Le and Hannah Facchini of UC Riverside for third, finished two shots behind medalist Amy Lee of Baylor and one shot back of Greta Isabella Voelker of Texas.

The Commodores moved up three spots from the first round after their 277 Tuesday, which tied Texas for the low round of the day. Vanderbilt counted a pair of 68’s from freshmen Abbey Carlson and Alison Armstrong, Farnsworth’s 70, and a one-under 71 from senior Kate Sborov.

Carlson had eight birdies in her final round at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, with Armstrong posting seven. For the day, Vanderbilt ended with 22 birdies that counted towards their team score.

“What a crazy weather week in the desert,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “It hardly ever storms and we had a round cancelled due to storms and today we had a two hour fog delay…in the desert. So I’m proud of how the girls kept a really positive mindset and embraced the things we couldn’t control. It was really nice today to see a lot of birdie putts go in. There are so many great things we can take away from today as we head into the offseason. Our freshmen were amazing today. Together they made 15 birdies! It was also nice to see Farney in contention today and I thought she handled the situation really well.”

Baylor won the team tournament title with a -25, 551 (273-278), which was eight shots better than host UNLV.

The Commodores now head into their winter break, and will return to the course February 12-14 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
