Longhorn Invitational Day 2 Results
The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in a tie for sixth with Stanford and host Texas after the second day of play at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational with a team score of 602 (300-302). Sophomore Marina Alex, who posted a tournament-best 70 on Saturday, is in a tie for third on the individual side with a total of one-under par, 143 (73-70).
Alex posted four birdies, two bogeys, and 12 pars in route to her two-under par, 70, Saturday. Her 143 ties her with Kristina Wong of Stanford for third place, one stroke behind Stephanie Kono of UCLA and Sarah Zwartynski of Texas A&M, who lead the tournament with a two-under par, 142.
“Marina really struck the ball well today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “She’s knocking on the door to get her first individual title, and hopefully she can break through with a good round Sunday.”
The Commodores, who teed off this morning, finished their round before the windy conditions at the University of Texas Golf Course took hold. Vanderbilt, with a 602, is in a tie with Stanford and Texas for sixth, and is only four strokes behind fourth place TCU. UCLA leads the tournament by one stroke over Arizona with a score of 585 (295-290).
“We actually made up some ground once when we finished because some teams behind us had to play in some really windy conditions,” said Allen.
Freshman Lauren Stratton posted a second-round 74, and has a 152 after two rounds (78-74, T-30), junior Megan Grehan had a 78 on Saturday and sits at 159 (81-78, T-69), sophomore Andrea Messer has a 154 for the tournament (74-80, T-38)), and senior Brooke Goodwin is tied with Grehan with a 159 (75-84, T-69).
The final round begins with a shotgun start on Sunday morning.
