Vanderbilt head women’s golf coach Greg Allen has announced the signings of Katie Sborov of Pleasanton, Calif., and Simin Feng of Orlando, Fla., to National Letters of Intent, and both will be eligible for the Commodores in the fall of 2013.
“I really enjoy the opportunity to coach every single day and i take great pride in recruiting,” said Allen. “I love the recruiting process and getting to know the young ladies and their families. Signing day is exciting because we can officially welcome them into the Vanderbilt community and the women’s golf family. Coach Holly wracked up some serious frequent flyer miles this summer touching down in all parts of the globe. We really feel like we’re at a place with our program where we can get some interest from every great player anywhere in the world. We obviously won’t sign them all, but it’s very encouraging knowing that the best players out there want to take a look at Vanderbilt.. We were very fortunate to sign two young ladies that will come in right away and have an immediate impact on the Vanderbilt campus both in the classroom and on the golf course.”
Sborov comes to Vanderbilt from Pleasanton, Calif., where she shot a 71 to lead her Foothill High School team to their first Northern California state championship last year. Sborov has also been steady on the junior circuit, placing in the top 10 in several AJGA events.
“The sky is the limit for Katie and Holly and I see so much upside to her game,” said Allen. “She is extremely athletic and plays really smart. She’ll remind Vanderbilt golf fans of Chris Brady. Academically, she’s a genius and might even be teaching a few classes by the time she graduates. She’s that bright. Katie has a very contagous positive attitude and is so eager to learn. We can’t wait for her to get here next fall.”
Feng comes to Nashville from Orlando, Fla., and the Windermere Preparatory School. Originally from Beijing China., she is ranked eighth in the country in the AJGA Polo Rankings at the time of her signing and is a four-time member of the AJGA Rolex Junior All-America second team. She posted a final round 66 in August to come from behind to win the AJGA Girls Championship, and while visiting family in China in August, she became the first amateur and youngest ever winner on the China LPGA Tour by capturing the Wuhan Orient Masters Challenge by six shots.
“Simin will arrive on campus as an already accomplished world-class player,” said Allen. “You can really learn a lot from a player when they are going through swing changes and having their struggles on the golf course. We saw Simin post some higher scores early in the summer but persevered through by finishing the summer with a bang, winning a big AJGA tournament then dominating a professional event in China. She showed us that she is very capable of posting rounds in the 60s and winning golf tournaments at all levels.”
