The Commodore women’s golf team blazed the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas with a 13-under par, 275, on Monday and moved into third place at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown after the second round of play at the event. All four of Vanderbilt’s counting scores on Monday were two-under or better, with sophomore Cindy Ha and junior Kate Sborov each leading the way with a pair of 68’s, respectively. Sborov’s 68 was a new career tournament low.
The Commodores have a two-round team score of 555 (280-277), and trail team leader San Jose State by five shots and second-place Michigan by one. Vanderbilt leads fourth-place Tennessee and San Diego State by three strokes.
Monday’s 275 was the Commodores’ best team score of the season, and the 13-under total tied for the second-lowest team score in the program’s history with the 2005 Stanford-Pepsi Intercollegiate’s third round, with the third round of the 2014 NCAA East Regional being the lowest all-time at 274. Vanderbilt counted 21 birdies and an eagle in their second round Monday.
Besides Ha and Sborov’s 68, Vanderbilt also counted a three-under 69 from senior Jennifer Hahn and a two-under 70 from sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth. Ha is the team’s leader on the tournament’s individual leaderboard with a nine-under, 135 (67-68), which puts her in fourth place. Hahn is in a tie for 11th with a seven-under, 137 (68-69).
“It was so much fun today!,” said associate head coach Holly Clark. “I felt like it was raining birdies at times. Kate put up her lowest tournament round, and I was really proud of her fight. We have a chance tomorrow and we need to come out with our minds right and ready to go! It’s going to be fun.”
San Jose State’s My Leander has the individual lead with a 12-under, 132 (65-67), one stroke better than Tennessee’s Anna Newell.
The final round of the tournament concludes on Tuesday.
