Wednesday at the Country Club of Landfall was a long, but productive, day for the Vanderbilt women’s golf team, as the squad fired a four-over par, 292, and moved into a tie for eighth place at the 2010 NCAA Women’s Championship in Wilmington, N.C.
The Commodores are in a tie for eighth with Florida State at 12-over par, 588 (296-292), but the Seminoles have not finished its second round because of weather delays. TCU, Texas A&M, Tulane, Stanford, and San Jose have not finished their second rounds, and will finish their second round early on Thursday morning.
Vanderbilt, which shot 10-over par on the Landfall back nine on Tuesday, managed to count six-over on Wednesday and got it going on the front side, going two-under. The Commodores’ 292 was the fifth-best round of the day on Wednesday.
Brooke Goodwin led the Commodores with a one-under par, 71, on Wednesday, due in part due to three straight birdies to close her second round. Goodwin and Marina Alex lead Vanderbilt for the tournament, with both players in a tie for 29th with a score of 147. Alex posted an even par, 72, on Wednesday.
Megan Grehan is next for the Commodores with a 149 (74-75), which ties her for 52nd, Anna Leigh Keith and Lauren Stratton are each at 152 for the tournament (T-83).
“They just hung in there on a tough day,” said assistant coach Nicki Cutler. “It wasn’t easy stopping and starting, and it wasn’t the easiest of conditions. They definitely persevered, which has been one of our key words this season. It’s definitely big that we had one of the best rounds of the day, and I think we’re in good position to make a good move on Thursday.”
Vanderbilt is still awaiting their tee time for Thursday. With a multitude of teams still needing to finish their second round, their scheduled tee time which could either begin at 12:30 or 1:25 p.m., will, in all likelihood, be pushed back by approximately 90 minutes.
