The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in a tie for third place with North Carolina after two rounds of the LSU Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La., with a two-round team total of 601 (302-299). The Commodores and Tar Heels trail co-leaders Tennessee and LSU, who both have a score of 587.
Junior Lauren Stratton is Vanderbilt’s leading scorer with an even-par, 144, after posting a pair of 72’s on Friday and Saturday at The University Club, which was set up as a par 72, 6,305-yard layout. Stratton is in third place on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Marina Alex, who led all individuals on Friday with a two-under 70, shot a 75 on Saturday and is in a tie for fourth. Other scores for the Commodores on Saturday were Anna Leigh Keith’s 75, Rene Sobolewski’s 77, and Kendall Martindale’s 78. Irina Gabasa, playing as an individual, posted a three-over par 74 on Saturday.
“I really thought when the day started we were going to make up some ground, but unfortunately by day’s end, we dug a deeper hole,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “However, we played well enough to put ourselves in the final pairing tomorrow and I truly believe we’re going to make a run. Stratty and Marina have a great chance to win individually and the other three have shown signs of playing well. We need to be patient, play smart and avoid the big numbers. We’ve had to count an eight and a nine the last two rounds. Those are numbers you see in the Tuesday morning ladies’ group.”
LSU’s Madalene Sagstrom leads all individuals with a two-under par, 142.
The final round concludes on Sunday from Baton Rouge, La.
