ATHENS – Junior Amber Lundskog shot a first-round 76 to lead the Commodores after the first round of competition at the NCAA East Regional in Athens, Ga. Vanderbilt fired a team score of 308, which has them in a tie for 12th place at the event, which is taking place at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens.
Lundskog led the way for Vanderbilt with a 76, and was followed by freshman Megan Grehan and sophomore Brooke Goodwin, who each carded 77’s. The Commodores also counted senior Liebelei Lawrence’s first round 78 on Thursday. Junior Jacqui Concolino fired a ten-over par, 82, to post Vanderbilt’s final first round individual score.
The Commodores are 23 strokes back of first-place Duke, who shot a three-under par, 285, on Thursday. The Blue Devils have a five stroke lead over second place Florida, who finished the first day with a 290.
“We got off to a pretty good start and had a good finish, but we struggled in the middle,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I’m not ready to count us out just yet, because I was pleased with the way we recovered.
“I told the team after the round that this is my tenth regional as a coach, and anything can happen at these things. We’ve got nothing to lose, and I liked the attitude we had today. We’ve just got to go out and play golf tomorrow.”
Individually, Sara-Maude Juneau leads the tournament after the first round with a 67. Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst and South Carolina’s Benedicte Toumpsin are one stroke back in second place with a score of 68.
The second round of the tournament continues on Friday.
