The Vanderbilt lf and women’s golf team fired a first-round 309 at the SEC Championships on Friday in Birmingham, and trail four teams tied for third place by three strokes heading into the second round Saturday at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
Sophomore Kendall Martindale led all Vanderbilt players with a 75 on Friday, which tied her for seventh overall on the individual leader board.
“The golf course, especially the front nine, played incredibly difficult and on top of that we weren’t playing well,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “But, I’m really proud of the way they hung in there and were able to turn it around on the back. I saw some really good shots down the stretch, but more importantly, I saw their confidence growing. Only six back playing as poorly as we played with a lot of golf ahead of us. It’s going to be fun.”
Other Commodore counting scores came from senior Lauren Stratton, who shot a 77, freshman Jenny Hahn, who fired a 78, and junior Rene Sobolewski, who carded a 79. Sophomore Irina Gabasa shot a first-round 80 on Friday.
LSU leads the tournament after the first round with a 303, and leads second-place Alabama by one stroke. Sarah Harris of Kentucky and Stani Schiavone leads the individual leader board after shooting a 73.
The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday morning.
