Wednesday’s round provided an array of challenges with weather delays and rain, but Thursday’s play took place in very ideal conditions, and Vanderbilt took full advantage, posting a three-over par, 291, for the day. The Commodores are in sixth place heading into the final round at the Country Club of Landfall with a team score of 879 (296-292-291).
Vanderbilt trails the leader, Purdue, by 21 strokes heading into Friday’s play. The Boilermakers fired an eight-under par, 280, on Thursday to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
The Commodores got a two-under par, 70, from senior Brooke Goodwin, in its best scoring effort of the day. Goodwin is in a tie for 16th for the tournament to lead all Vanderbilt players. Lauren Stratton and Marina Alex each shot a one-over par, 73, and Anna Leigh Keith was the team’s final counting score with a three-over par, 75. Megan Grehan fired a four-over par, 76, in her round on Thursday.
“I started off very solid, had a little hiccup on the back, but fought back and got a birdie on the last hole,” said Goodwin. “Overall, I’m pretty pleased.”
Alex is in a tie for 28th with a four-over par, 220 for the tournament. Grehan and Stratton are in a tie for 59th with a 225 (74-75-76; 78-74-73), and Keith is in a tie for 74th with a score of 227 (71-81-75).
Jennifer Johnson of Arizona State is leading the tournament with a nine-under par, 207, and Caroline Hedwall is a stroke behind her at 208.
“It was another solid team effort today and it was great to see our senior do so well,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “It’s one that we’ve been used to for the last eight weeks. It was just an all-around team effort. We got a four-over par from Marina today, but still sit in sixth place in the national championship. I’m really proud of this group. It’s been a very emotional week for me and for them, and they are having a lot of fun. They are enjoying playing golf and being around each other.”
Vanderbilt will be paired with Alabama and Allen’s old school, Arizona, on Friday in the final round. The Commodores begin their round at 12:30 p.m. off of the number one tee.
