The Commodores’ women’s golf team fired a second-round score of 299 and is in a tie for fourth heading into the third and final round of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., with a team score of 584 (285-299). Sophomore Jenny Hahn posted Vanderbilt’s best score of the day with a one-under par, 71, and is in a tie for 13th on the individual leader board after two rounds.
Vanderbilt, who led the tournament after the first round, counted Hahn’s 71, a 73 from freshman Simin Feng, a 76 from sophomore Morgan Ransom, and a 79 from freshman Antonia Scherer and junior Kendall Martindale. Senior Rene Sobolewski shot a second-round 72 as an individual.
“Today was a rough day at the office,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “As easy as it was yesterday, today was just the opposite. As a whole, we struggled from a ball striking standpoint and didn’t make many putts. But they hung in there and competed all the way. I told them they proved yesterday that we can be a great team and today proved that great teams can struggle. What’s important now is how we respond tomorrow I’m very confident in this team and their abilities.”
Duke is the overall leader with a team score of 568 (286-282), 12 strokes better than second-place Alabama. Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson is in the individual leader with a seven-under par, 137 (68-69), and has a three-stroke lead on Laetitia Beck of Duke and Caroline Nistrup of LSU, who are in a tie for second.
The third and final round of the tournament will conclude on Sunday. Vanderbilt will tee off in a shotgun start beginning at 8:15 Central Time.
