Darius Rucker Intercollegiate 1st Round Results
The Commodore women’s golf team jumped off to a good start at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C., at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, finishing the opening 18 holes in fourth place with a team score of 12-over par, 296. Lauren Stratton and Kendall Martindale led the Vanderbilt effort on Friday, with both tallying a first-round 73, which ties them for eighth place.
“It was a good day, and I was really proud of their mindset,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “They looked comfortable, looked content, and they competed hard. They also displayed some good patience. This golf course really requires you to hit good shots because trouble is everywhere. But, they didn’t let the course or anything bother them and responded well.”
Vanderbilt trails first-round leader Arkansas by three strokes, and second place North Carolina and LSU by one stroke.
The Commodores counted Martindale and Stratton’s 73, as well as a pair of 75’s from Irina Gabasa and Jenny Hahn. Rene Sobolewski shot a first-round 86.
Individually, Emma Lavy of Arkansas shot Friday’s only round in the 60’s with a 68. She holds a three-stroke lead on a trio of players tied for second place.
The Commodores will tee off at 9 a.m. ET Saturday for their second round, and will play with defending national champion Alabama and instate rival Tennessee.
