ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Liebelei Lawrence shot a one-over par, 71, to lead the Commodores at the NCAA East Regional in Athens, Ga., on Friday at the University of Georgia Golf Course. As a team, Vanderbilt is in 12th place after the second round of the event with a team score of 613 (308-305).
The Commodores, at 613, are only eight strokes back of eighth-place New Mexico, who sit at 605 after two days of play. The top eight teams and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, May 20-23.
“We had a strong start, but just didn’t play the last holes very well,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We just need to come out tomorrow and handle our emotions and the pressure and have a solid day. If we come out and play like we did on the first 12 holes, we’ll have a great chance. We’re right there.”
Scores were up on Friday across the board due to windier conditions, but Liebelei Lawrence had a steady day, posting a one-over, 71, on Friday. Lawrence is in a tie for 25th with a two-day total of 151 (78-73). Junior Amber Lundskog, playing in only her third spring tournament, is in a tie for 33rd place with a 152 after posting a pair of 76’s in the first two days, and Brooke Goodwin is in a tie for 49th with a two-day score of 154 (77-77). Freshman Megan Grehan has a score of 156 (77-79, T-61), and junior Jacqui Concolino has a two-day total of 163 (82-81, T-95).
The University of Florida leads the regional with a two-day score of 585 (290-295), three strokes better than Duke, who is at 588 (285-303).
South Carolina’s Benedicte Toumpsin leads the individual portion of the tournament with a six-under par, 138 (68-70), and has a three stroke lead over Amanda Blumenherst of Duke and Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville, who both have a score of 141.
