STANFORD, Calif. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team heads to the Stanford Intercollegiate as defending champions for this weekend’s event at the Stanford Golf Course. The Commodores, who claimed the 2006 crown with a team total of 855 (288-292-275), are looking to defend its title against a field that includes 11 top-30 ranked teams.

“The team is really fired up to defend the title won at Stanford last year,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “It’s another really strong field and if we play well consistently for three rounds I think we have a chance to win on Sunday. I like the attitude and confidence this team has right now. Friday could be a big test for this team because the tournament committee is pairing us with Arizona and Texas. We need to do a good job of handling our emotions and just take care of our business.”

The 18-team field will play 18 holes each day on the 6,092 yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Course. Competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, followed by a 7:30 a.m. start on Sunday. The Commodores have the first five tee times off of the number one tee on day one, and are paired with Arizona and Texas. Jacqui Concolino, Brooke Goodwin, Megan Grehan, Liebelei Lawrence, and Amber Lundskog will be participating for Vanderbilt this weekend.

Of the 18 participating squads, 11 are ranked among the nation’s top-30 teams recognized in this week’s edition of the Golfweek rankings. That list includes No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Duke, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 8 Arizona and No. 10 Georgia.

Also competing this weekend are No. 14 California, No. 15 Vanderbilt, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 20 Pepperdine, No. 23 Texas and No. 28 New Mexico. Rounding out the field are Washington State, San Jose State, Oregon, Washington, UNLV and Oregon State.

Defending champion Vanderbilt recorded a total of 855 (288-292-275) to claim the team hardware in 2006. Stacy Lewis of Arkansas (71-67-69-207) and Alison Walshe of Arizona (67-71-69-207) earned a share of the individual tournament title last year.
