REUNION, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team completed the first day of the 2007 Hooters Match Play Championship at the Independence Course in Reunion, Fla., Sunday 0-1 after a loss to No. 10 seed Alabama 4-1, but the No. 7 seed Commodores lead No. 15 seed Louisville, 1-0, in the second round that was suspended due to darkness.
The second round, which will conclude Monday morning, has Vanderbilt leading 1-0 after sophomore Brooke Goodwin clinched her match, 6 and 5, over Louisville’s Laura Anderson. The Commodores’ Jacqui Concolino is 1-up through 14 holes over the Cardinals’ Cindy LaCrosee, VU’s Megan Grehan is 3-up through 14 over Louisville’s Jenny Calkins, and fellow Commodore Liebelei Lawrence is 3-up through 14 over U of L’s Sara-Maude Juneau. Louisville’s Amanda Hendry is 1-up on Vanderbilt’s Julie Bartholomew through 14 holes in the fifth and final match.
In the opening match, Vanderbilt got some quality play out of Jacqui Concolino, but Alabama got off to a quick start and never looked back to send the Commodores to the loser’s bracket, 4-1. Concolino won her match, 3 and 2, but the Crimson Tide took the other four – Camilla Lennarth defeated Megan Grehan, 3 and 2, Kathleen Ekey took out Liebelei Lawrence, 3 and 1, Laura Goodwin defeated Brooke Goodwin, 4 and 3, and Rhea Nair beat Julie Bartholomew, 4 and 3.
“Against Alabama we didn’t play well,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Jacqui was the only one to get something going. Liebelei hung around, but lost a couple of holes down the stretch. Megan and Brooke got off to a poor start, and couldn’t really recover from it. Right now, we just want to finish off Louisville and finish 3-1 and win the rest of our matches. That’s our goal. We’re playing well now and we’ve got to keep it going.”
Play continues Monday morning at the Independence Course at the Ginn Resort.
