Stanford Intercollegiate Final Results
Vanderbilt wrapped up its fall season with a bang on Sunday, finishing the Stanford Intercollegiate in third place with a team total of 10-over par, 862 (290-283-289), while sophomore Marina Alex ended the fall campaign with three consecutive top three finishes and her fourth top 10 of the year after completing the tournament in a tie for third with a score of 209 (66-71-72).
“I feel like in the last two tournaments, we played with all of the best teams in the east when we played in Chapel Hill, and then this week, we played against the best teams from the west,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “And, I’m very pleased with the way our fall has gone. We’ve had so many positives this fall.”
The Commodores posted a 289 on Sunday, which tied for the third-best total of the day, and moved VU into third place for the weekend. Arizona State claimed the team title with an 840 (273-282-285), four strokes better than second-place UCLA.
Alex continued her excellent play with her third-place finish, but the Commodores also had great outings from the rest of the lineup. Vanderbilt counted one-over par 72’s from freshman Lauren Stratton and junior Megan Grehan, and a 73 from freshman Anna Leigh Keith. Senior Brooke Goodwin carded a 75 on Sunday, but finished the tournament in a tie for 30th with a score of 219 (73-71-75).
“Marina had a great fall. I think her stroke average is going to be right around 70,” continued Allen. “I told her that I’ve coached some good players, but there’s been very few that have done that. I think Lorena’s (Ochoa) average was right around 70, but hers was for the whole year.”
Stratton finished in a tie for 13th with a 214 (75-67-72), Grehan ended the tournament in 40th with a score of 222 (76-74-72), and Keith finished a stroke back of Grehan with a 223 (76-74-73, T-41).
“Our freshman are getting good experience, and Megan is making progress,” said Allen. “We really don’t want it to end, because it’s going so well for us. But, we’ll shut it down for a few months and get ready for the spring. We’ve got plenty of things to work on.”
