Vanderbilt sophomore Marina Alex added another top five finish to her resume Sunday when she ended the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in second place with a total of 219 (73-70-76). As a team, the Commodores finished in seventh place with a score of 913 (300-302-311) for the tournament.
Alex, who tallied her sixth top five finish of the season and her fourth second place finish, posted a third-round 76 on Sunday. Alex finished six strokes behind Texas A&M’s Sarah Zwartynski, who claimed medalist honors and ended the tournament with a 213 (70-72-71).
Alex led the Commodore contingent for the weekend, who ended the tournament in seventh place as a team. UCLA claimed the team title with a three-round score of 884.
“Today was kind of difficult for everyone,” said Alex. “I didn’t really play all that well and did a lot of scrambling. I needed to hit it a little better to feel more confident today.”
Other Vanderbilt finishes for the weekend were Lauren Stratton’s 231 (78-74-79, T-33), Andrea Messer’s 233 (74-80-79, T-39), Megan Grehan’s 236 (81-78-77, T-47), and Brooke Goodwin’s 239 (75-84-80, T-63). Anna Leigh Keith played as an individual and finished with a 239 (78-81-80, T-63).
“There were tough conditions today and no one particularly well, which is not a good combination,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “It’s a pretty challenging golf course to begin with, but throw in the wind, and it got really tough.
“We’ve got one more tournament left in the regular season before SEC’s, so we’ve got to get it turned around pretty quick.”
The Commodores have a quick turnaround before their next tournament, which is next weekend at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
