CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team ended the Tar Heel Invitational in a tie for fifth place with a team score of 886 (297-299-290), nine strokes behind Duke, who won the tournament with a 877. The Commodores were led by Jacqui Concolino, who carded her first top five individual finish of the season with a two-under par 214 (70-73-71), which put her in third place overall.
The Commodores, who finished in the top five for the second consecutive week, put together the second-lowest round of the day with a team score of 290. Vanderbilt finished in a tie for fifth with Wake Forest, who also ended the tournament at 886 (295-298-293).
“We’re getting there and we’re making progress,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We had the second-low scoring round of the day, and we hit some great shots and had some good putts, but those putts didn’t drop. Jacqui had it going, and Megan (Grehan) had it going. We had a good start and got to third place, but on our finishing holes of four, five, and six, we gave away five shots.”
Concolino shot a one-under par, 71, in route to a three-round score of three-under, 214. Concolino finished five strokes behind winner Amanda Blumenherst, who ended the tournament with a 209 (71-68-70), and one stroke behind Alina Lee, who finished with a 212 (74-68-70).
“I’m looking at the overall picture, and we were under par as a team with four holes left,” said Allen. “I’m really pleased with the way Megan is playing. She’s been under par the last two days. Brooke (Goodwin) hit the ball well but couldn’t get the putts to drop. It was fun today, we had a chance. The effort was there, and we played with a lot of heart. We had a top five finish in our last two events, and that’s what we’re looking for as we build toward the spring.”
Freshman Megan Grehan had her first top 20 finish as a collegian for the Commodores, ending the Tar Heel Invitational with a four-over par, 220 (79-71-70), good for 15th place. Brooke Goodwin finished with a seven-over par, 223 (73-75-75), which tied her for 28th, Liebelei Lawrence fired a 13-over, 229 (75-80-74, T-52) for the tournament, and Julie Bartholomew ended the weekend with a 253 (81-85-87, 93).
The Commodores are off until October 19-21, when Vanderbilt will compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
