The Commodores ended the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in second place, one shot behind team champion Purdue, with a final score of 877 (290-293-294). Freshman Jenny Hahn had her best finish as a collegian, ending the tournament in a tie for third with a total of 218 (70-73-75), while sophomore Kendall Martindale posted the team’s best score of the day with a final-round 67.
The runner-up finish is the team’s third in three tries this spring.
“I’m really proud of the round Kendall gave us, and what a great tournament for Jenny. As a freshman, she had a chance to win and that’s a big deal,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Unfortunately we came up one short. We hit some poor shots today that put a lot of pressure on our short game. We can’t expect to win golf tournaments when we have this many three putts and play the par 5’s the way we did today. Overall, we had another chance to win. As a coach, that’s what you want, a chance. We’ll keep knocking on that door and eventually we’re going to break it down.”
Hahn, who tied Natalie Wille of Augusta State for third, finished one stroke back of Paula Reto of Purdue, who tallied a 217, and three strokes back of medalist Ashley Armstrong of Notre Dame, who ended the tournament with a 215 (76-69-70).
Three other Commodores finished in the top 15 on the individual leader board – Rene Sobolewski, who ended the tournament in a tie for 13th (73-75-75=223), Kendall Martindale, who finished in a tie for 15th (81-76-67=224), and Lauren Stratton, who also finished 15th (69-75-80=224). Irina Gabasa carded a 225 (78-70-77), and finished in a tie for 19th.
Freshman Morgan Ransom played as an individual and ended the tournament in a tie for 45th with a 234 (75-82-77).
The Commodores will play in their final regular season tournament of the season March 29-31 at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
