Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Final Results
The Commodore women’s golf team ended the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Sunday in a tie for second with LSU and four strokes behind team champion Alabama at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C., with a final total of 880 (296-282-302). Sophomore Kendall Martindale led the Vanderbilt effort with a three-over par, 216 (73-71-72) which tied her for fifth place. Fellow sophomore Irina Gabasa also carded a top ten finish, ending the tournament in a tie for ninth with a total of 219 (75-68-76).
“The conditions were a lot tougher today, it was little cooler, and that really magnified the difficulties of this golf course,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We got off to a shaky start, got it turned around, but then went into the teeth of the win after the turn and gave some strokes back.
“We’re disappointed for sure, but this was a tough field and a tough golf course, and we had a good result. We’re going to keep knocking at the door, and we’re going to knock it down. We’re not trying to win one tournament, but a bunch of them. I feel for them, but we’re learning and we’re playing with a lot of confidence. It was a fun week.”
Martindale had the team’s best score on Sunday with a one-over par, 72. Gabasa and Rene Sobolewski each posted a 76, and the Commodores’ final counting score was a 78 from Jenny Hahn. Lauren Stratton carded an 80 in her final round at Long Cove.
Noemi Jimenez of Arizona State won medalist honors with a four-under par, 209, four strokes better than LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom.
The Commodores will be back in action March 15-17 at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in Augusta, Ga.
