The Vanderbilt women’s golf team finished the Shoal Creek Regional in Birmingham, Ala., with a final score of 935 (302-316-317), which placed them tenth in the team standings for the tournament. Freshman Courtney Zeng led the team with a final score of 226 (76-72-78), which tied her for 12th individually.
With the tenth place finish, the Commodores missed the top-six cut for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Northwestern led all teams at the tournament with a 23-over par, 887 (296-294-297), with Florida State, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan rounding out the top six.
Individually, Matilda Castren of Florida State, Janet Mao of Northwestern, and Marianne Li of California shared medalist honors with a four-over par, 220. Li, Lauren Stephenson of Clemson, and August Kim of Purdue advanced to the NCAA Championship as individuals.
For the Commodores on Saturday, Zeng paced the final-round effort with a 78. Vanderbilt also counted a 79 from sophomore Cindy Ha and a pair of 80’s from senior Jennifer Hahn and sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth.
“We feel like we just got punched in the stomach,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “And, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Just a lot of big numbers. This golf course rewarded good ball striking and unfortunately we didn’t have it this week. It’s really sad to see Jenn’s college career come to a close. It’s been a privilege to coach her and I look forward to watch her take her game to the professional level.”
