WG drops consolation match to Kent State, 4-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After two wins on Monday at the NGCA Match Play Championship, the Vanderbilt women’s golf team fell in the finals of the consolation bracket to Kent State 4-1 today. The Commodores ended match play with a 2-1 record over the last two days.

Vanderbilt, playing its final competition of the fall season, got its lone individual win in match with the Golden Flashes from freshman Marina Alex, who defeated Mercedes Germino, 4 and 2.

Three of the other matches were extremely close, and were decided on the last two holes of competition. Martina Gavier defeated Vanderbilt junior Brooke Goodwin, 1 Up; Kirby Dreher outlasted Commodore sophomore Megan Grehan, 2 and 1; and Mandi Morrow beat out Vanderbilt freshman Andrea Messer, 2 and 1. In the fifth match, Shamira Marshall of Kent State knocked off Vanderbilt’s Jacqui Concolino, 6 and 4.

Duke won the championship bracket for the fifth time in six years when they defeated Alabama, 4-1.

Vanderbilt is off until the spring season, when the team travels to the Pinehurst Challenge March 2-3.
