CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico –
The women’s golf squad, sparked by solid rounds by Abbey Carlson and Courtney Zeng, climbed the leaderboard during the second round of the Battle at the Beach Saturday.

Using a nine-stroke team improvement from the opening round, Vanderbilt enters the final round Sunday in ninth place with a two-day score of 589. The Commodores jumped above North Carolina, TCU and Mississippi State during the second round with a 5-over 290 tally.

For most of the second round, Greg Allen’s squad looked to pass other teams. Early the back nine, the Commodores reached 2-under, but not sustain the sensational play in the tough closing holes.

The Commodores’ collective play – and bounce back from a disappointing first round effort – pleased their head coach.

“I was really proud of our response today. I liked the intensity level and the focus,” Allen said. “It was nice seeing Abbey under par and Courtney bounce back and play at the level she’s been playing all fall.

“This team can still play better than we did today and we have an opportunity to do exactly that on Sunday,” Allen added.

Carlson, who struggled to a 76 on Friday, put together the team’s first sub-par round of the tournament, a 1-under 70. Her performance was highlighted by three birdies. Carlson enters the final round tied for 30th in the individual competition, tops on the team.

Like Carlson, Zeng enjoyed a big one-day improvement. After going 6-over Friday, Zeng went out and carded an even par 71 that featured three late birdies.

Morgan Baxendale and Louise Yu also improved Saturday, shooting 74 and 75, respectively. Both flirted with par for much of the day.

Alexandra Farnsworth, the team’s low scorer Friday with a 72, posted 78. Virginia Green, playing as an independent, carded a 76.

The Battle at the Beach concludes Sunday with 18 holes starting at 9:30 a.m. CT.
