Sophomore Marina Alex led the Commodore effort with a one-under par, 71, after the first round of the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Finley Golf Course. Alex is in a tie for fifth, while the team is in 10th place after posting a 10-over par, 298, on Friday.
The Commodores trail first-place Michigan State by 13 strokes after the Spartans fired a first-round 285. Alabama is five strokes back of Michigan State with a two-over par 290.
Alex is two strokes back of individual leader, Laura Keueny of Michigan State, who shot a three-under par 69. The sophomore from Wayne, N.J., had three birdies and two bogeys in her round on Friday.
True freshman Anna Leigh Keith was next for Vanderbilt after shooting a one-over par 73, which ties her for 22nd place. Other Commodore scores for the day were Brooke Goodwin’s 76 (T-42), Megan Grehan’s 78 (T-64), and Lauren Stratton’s 81 (T-83).
The second round continues Saturday morning at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
