NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt head women’s golf coach Greg Allen has announced the signings of Marina Alex and Andrea Messer to National Letters of Intent and will be eligible for the Commodores in the fall of 2008. Alex and Messer are Allen’s first two Vanderbilt signees since he was named head coach of the Commodores in the summer of 2007.
“I’m really excited about our first recruiting class and think that Marina and Andrea will make an immediate impact on our team next fall,” said Allen. “They are both a perfect fit for the ideal Vanderbilt student-athlete.”
Marina Alex of Wayne, N.J., was a 2007 AJGA Honorable Mention All-American and was named the 11th-best player in the 2008 class by the AJGA. She played in three AJGA tournaments in August and finished in a tie for second, third, and second, respectively. As a junior in high school, Alex shot a 74 to become the first girl to win the Passaic County (N.J.) golf championship and also won medalist honors at last year’s New Jersey state women’s golf championship. Also at the end of last year, her hometown paper, The Record, selected Alex as the North Jersey Girls Golfer of the Year.
Andrea Messer, comes to Vanderbilt from Largo, Fla., where she recorded three top 10 AJGA finishes in the summer of 2007. She is ranked 39th in the AJGA class of 2008, and qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., and advanced to match play before losing in the second round. In 2005, Messer finished as the runner-up in the FHSAA Girls Class 2A Golf.
Alex and Messer are both eligible to compete for the Commodores in the fall of 2008.
