The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in seventh place after the first round of the Dale McNamara Fall Preview at the Tulsa Country Club with a team score of seven-over par, 287. Sophomore Morgan Ransom fired a one-under par, 69, to lead all Commodore golfers, while junior Irina Gabasa is one stroke back of Ransom with an even-par, 70.
Ransom had three birdies and two bogeys in her round on Monday, her first competitive rounds for Vanderbilt since the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate last season, and is in a tie for third on the individual leader board. Gabasa, who closed her 2012-13 season strong, is tied for 12th in the individual standings.
Other scores for the Commodores on Monday was Kendall Martindale’s 71, which ties her for 21st, Antonia Scherer’s 77, which is good for a tie for 63rd, and Katie Rose Higgins’ 85, which has her in 75th position.
“Morgan continues to impress me and show what a summer of hard work and competing can do for you,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “This golf course sets up well for her and Irina. I’m pleased with the way we competed from start to finish. We need to come out tomorrow and keep it in the fairway. It’s not an easier course from the rough and trees.”
Oklahoma State leads the tournament after shooting a first-round 278, four strokes better than second-place Oklahoma. Individually, Julie Yang of Oklahoma State leads the Fall Preview after shooting a 67 on Monday. Yang holds a one-stroke lead over Lauren Kim of Stanford.
The second round of the Dale McNamara Fall Preview is set for Tuesday.
