The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team jumped two spots in the last ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, entering the Top 10 for the first time since the Fall of 2002.

With two victories over the New Year’s weekend, the Commodores improved to 13-1 on the season. One more win would tie the 2006-07 squad for the second-best start in school history. The 1992-93 Commodores began 22-1 on their way to the NCAA Final Four.

The Commodores also rank in the Top 10 nationally of a number of statistical categories, including:
Scoring Offense: 82.6 ppg (fourth)
Field-goal percentage: 50.7% (third)
Three-point field-goal percentage: 40.7% (eighth)
Assists per game: 20.3 (fourth)

Vanderbilt is looking for its second win over a ranked opponent this week when Arkansas (No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 20 according to the Associated Press) visits Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville on Thursday, Jan. 4, for a 7 p.m. CT tip-off. The Commodores defeated then-No. 16 California back in November to win the VU Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Commodores are ranked No. 11 by the AP, as Vanderbilt and Purdue (13-2) swap spots in the two polls.
