NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 15/14 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team returns home to historic Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 25, to play host to in-state rival Tennessee for a key Southeastern Conference matchup. The game will be televised by FSN South and is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. CT.

Vanderbilt brings an undefeated 11-0 home record, including a pair of wins over ranked opponents Arkansas and California, into Thursday’s contest. The familiar surroundings are sure to be a welcome site, as four of the Commodores’ last five games have been on the road and trips to Arkansas and Kentucky await in the next week.

Both Vanderbilt and Tennessee are returning to SEC play after recently facing Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. The Lady Vols are stinging after a tough home loss against top-ranked Duke, while the Commodores hope to ride the momentum of an impressive second-half against Georgia Tech that included a 26-0 run to put the game away.

Fans who come into Nashville for Thursday’s game should expect to be treated to a spectacular exhibition from downtown — as in, behind the three-point line. Vanderbilt enters Thursday’s game as the No. 1 three-point shooting team in the nation (41.3 percent), led by senior Caroline Williams. Tennessee’s Sidney Spencer is the country’s most accurate individual shooter, connecting on 51.9 percent of her long-range attempts.

The Commodores are looking to reverse recent history, as the Lady Vols have won the last 11 meetings between the two teams dating back to a pair of Vanderbilt wins in 2001 and 2002. The most recent meeting — Feb. 12, 2006, in Knoxville — was decided by only three points.

More history stands to be rewritten on Thursday, as Commodore senior Dee Davis — averaging an SEC-best 6.5 assists per game — enters the UT game only three helpers shy of former VU great Ashley McElhiney, who holds the current school record of 673 career assists.

Fans attending the game will have a unique opportunity to give back to their community. Vanderbilt football tailback Cassen Jackson-Garrison is serving as the honorary chairman of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s effort to collect new and gently used winter coats and caps for needy children in surrounding counties.

The project, called “Cassen’s Coats and Caps for the Counties”, calls for fans attending the VU/UT women’s basketball game to donate used coats and caps at collection sites around Memorial Gymnasium.
