NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Behind 23 points from senior Liz Sherwood, the Vanderbilt women’s basketball closed its exhibition schedule with a 76-41 victory over Division II Anderson (S.C.) University Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Commodores shot over 50 percent from the field, paced by Sherwood’s 9-of-12 performance inside. Junior Jennifer Risper and freshman Jence Rhoads added 10 points each, as 12 Commodores scored on the night.
Rhoads started at point guard Monday, the lone lineup change from Wednesday’s 104-43 victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
The Commodores’ swarming defense forced 28 Anderson turnovers and converted them into 25 points. Risper led all players with five of Vanderbilt’s 17 steals.
“We finished stronger tonight, and did a much better job defensively,” VU Head Coach Melanie Balcomb said. “Especially making adjustments in the second half, this was a much better effort than last week.”
Anderson, which has reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of the past four seasons, finished a three-game tour that included losses to Virginia Tech (72-52) and Wake Forest (67-50).
Vanderbilt opens the 2007-08 regular season this weekend with home games against UAB (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Furman (Sunday, 2 p.m.). Season tickets to the Commodores’ 17-game home schedule begin
at only $25 for lower-level seats.
