The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team used one of its final weekends before the start of practice for the 2011-12 season to volunteer at the 12th Annual Shelby Bottoms Boogie 15K/5K Race in East Nashville. Held at Shelby Bottoms Nature Center along the Cumberland River, the pair of races benefited Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Nashville.

The annual event, sponsored by the Nashville Striders running club, featured both a 15K race and a 5K run/walk through Shelby Bottoms’ race course along the Cumberland. The event featured post-race festivities, refreshments and prizes for overall and age groups winners.

The Commodores contributed by helping set up water stations for the race, as well as staffing refreshment stands for the post-race celebration.

“The community does so much for us, with all the love and support they give to us – the program and the school,” junior forward Tiffany Clarke said. “Therefore, we just love to return the favor and give back.”

All proceeds benefited CASA, which recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the best interest of children who come to the attention of the juvenile justice system due to neglect, abuse or abandonment.

Just Around The Corner

Fans can get their first look at this year’s squad on Friday, October 14, at Memorial Madness. The season kickoff event begins at 8:00 p.m. in Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gym. The event is free of charge and will feature an autograph session and meet-and-greet with the men’s and women’s basketball teams, among other special events.

The season opens on Saturday, November 5, when they host Clayton State in an exhibition contest. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym.

In addition, the women’s basketball program will be participating in the Vanderbilt Medical Center’s Flulapalooza. VUMC will attempt to set a Guinness World Record by giving 8,000 flu shots to university staff and students during an eight hour period. Why? The official goal of the event is to test the Medical Center’s emergency mass vaccination plan as if there really were a pandemic.
