Nov. 10, 2010
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb announced the signing of two prep standouts to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.
Signing with the Commodores were 5’7″ guard Maggie Morrison (Archbishop Spalding High School/Millersville, Md.) and 5’9″ guard Kady Schrann (York Catholic High School/York, Pa.). Both players will compete for the Commodores during the 2011-12 season.
“With the signing of Maggie and Kady, our backcourt has a chance to be one of the strongest and deepest we have had at Vanderbilt,” Balcomb said. “I love the fact that each can handle the ball, score off the dribble and shoot the three. Kady and Maggie are capable of playing any of the three guard positions, and I expect these two to be a dynamic combo.”
The two-person signing class comes one year after the Commodores signed five players to National Letters of Intent, including three players taller than 6’0″. Two members of that class – Jasmine Lister and Christina Foggie – started both of Vanderbilt’s exhibition games.
Ranked No. 108 by Blue Star Report and as the 45th-best point guard in the class of 2011 by ESPN HoopGurlz, Maggie Morrison averaged 13 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds last season en route to leading Archbishop Spalding High School to a 23-6 record and the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship game under Head Coach Bookie Rosemond. For her career, Morrison has averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 assists and 3.4 steals.
“Maggie is one of those special players who makes everyone around her better,” Balcomb said. “She is highly skilled, has great floor vision, and is a confident and vocal leader.”
Morrison was a first team All-Met selection by the Baltimore Sun in 2009 and 2010. She was also a first team All-Met selection by the Washington Post in 2010. The Millersville, Md., native is a three-time first team All-County Capital/Gazette pick as well as first team All-IAAM “A” Conference selection. Morrison is also a three-year team captain and two-time team MVP.
Morrison plays AAU basketball for Head Coach Robert Hildreth and the Lady Terps.
Morrison is also a standout forward on her high school soccer team, which she helped lead to a runner-up finish at state last Saturday. She is a two-time first team all-state selection and was the 2009 and 2010 Capital/Gazette Soccer Player of the Year. She also earned first team All-Met honors in 2008, 2009 and 2010 from the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun.
Schrann is ranked No. 48 overall and as the ninth-best point guard in the class of 2011 by ESPN Hoopgurlz.
The York, Pa., native is a three-time first team all-state selection by the Associated Press at York Catholic High School under Head Coach Kevin Bankos. Schrann has led the team to three straight appearances in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA state title game, as well three straight District 3 Class AA championships. York Catholic has a tradition of winning and has played in five straight state championships games.
In 2010, Schrann averaged 18 points per game and helped her school to a 28-4 season and a runner-up finish at state. Schrann currently has 1,629 points and is on track to become York Catholic’s all-time leading scorer.
“Kady has an uncanny ability to make things happen on both ends of the floor,” Balcomb said. “She can impact a game with or without the ball in her hands, and that is a rare skill.”
Schrann plays AAU basketball for Head Coach Bill McDonough and the Lady Running Rebels.
Schrann is also a standout on the cross country team, where she qualified for the state championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Vanderbilt will open its regular season at 2 p.m. Sunday against Howard.
