View Box Score | Women’s Basketball Season Tickets Start at $25
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 17th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s basketball team opened the fall preseason with a 104-43 victory over Cumberland University Wednesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Commodores’ first tune-up of the exhibition season gave Head Coach Melanie Balcomb a chance to see her entire roster in action. Five players scored in double-figures, led by a game-high 16 points from senior Liz Sherwood and junior All-SEC selection Christina Wirth.
Twelve Commodores scored during the evening as the team took a 54-14 lead into halftime. On the evening, sophomore Jessica Mooney scored 14 points, while sophomore Amber Norton (12) and junior Jennifer Risper (10) also kicked in double-digits.
Sophomore guard Merideth Marsh had a great night running the point, posting seven assists against zero turnovers. The Commodores only had 10 turnovers in the game, while forcing the Lady Bulldogs into 33 mistakes. Freshman guard Jence Rhoads led all players with five steals, while five other Commodores registered multiple takeaways. The Commodores scored 48 points off CU turnovers.
Freshmen Chanel Chisholm, Rebecca Silinski and Hannah Tuomi also saw their first live action Wednesday.
The Commodores close out exhibition play on Monday, Nov. 5, against Anderson University, in a doubleheader with the VU men’s team. The women’s game is scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. CT at Memorial Gym.
Vanderbilt, which was recently ranked No. 17 in the USA TODAY/ESPN preseason Coaches Poll, opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9, when UAB visits Nashville for a 7 p.m. start.
