NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 11/10 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team plays host to No. 20/23 Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference opener for both schools on Thursday, January 4, at 7 p.m. CT in Memorial Gymnasium.
Both teams enter Thursday’s contest with only one loss so far this season. The Commodores are 13-1, riding a five-game winning streak since falling at then-No. 4 Duke. The Lady Razorbacks are 15-1 and have won eight straight since losing to No. 2 North Carolina in Hawaii.
The teams faced off twice last year. In a league opener played in Fayetteville, Arkansas’ Brittney Vaughn hit a buzzer-beater from just past midcourt to send the contest to overtime, where the Lady Razorbacks would sink a free throw with two seconds left to pull off the upset, 52-51.
The Commodores would avenge that loss 31 days later with a five-point win at Memorial Gymnasium.
Vanderbilt is led by an outstanding trio of seniors in Dee Davis, Carla Thomas and Caroline Williams. Davis and Arkansas’ Brittney Vaughn are first and second, respectively, in the conference for assists per game.
Thomas ranks third in the league with a scoring average of 17.7 points per game. She is approaching Vanderbilt’s all-time Top 10 for career scoring.
