NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 19th-ranked Commodore women’s basketball team plays host to the annual Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend at Memorial Gymnasium.
Vanderbilt opens play at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, Nov. 23, against Belmont, followed by a matchup between Iowa State and Michigan. The consolation and championship games will be played beginning at 12 Noon on Sunday. Admission is free to all four games of the tournament.
The Commodores (3-1) played a strong second half in their first road win of the season Tuesday at Clemson. Senior Liz Sherwood scored 22 points and pulled 12 rebounds as Vanderbilt outscored the Lady Tigers by 18 in game’s final 20 minutes.
Belmont (2-3) is coming off a Tuesday road victory over Tennessee Tech. The Commodores are the Bruins’ second SEC opponent of the season. Mississippi State defeated Belmont, 66-51, last week.
Friday’s second game features the Big 12 against the Big 10. Iowa State (2-0) opened the season with victories against Pepperdine and Sacramento State. Michigan (3-0) has defeated Akron, Cincinnati and Miami (Fla.) this season.
Victories over Florida Atlantic and California propelled the Commodores to the 2006 Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament championship.
Vanderbilt’s current three-game homestand includes a matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 28, against No. 8 Duke. All university staff and their guests will be granted free admission to Wednesday’s contest, which tips at 7 p.m. CT.
