ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Christina Wirth scored 18 points to lead Vanderbilt to a 61-54 win over Georgia (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) on Sunday at Stegeman Coliseum.
With the victory, Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb picked up her 300th career win. The Commodores (16-6, 5-2 SEC) also completed a regular season sweep of the Lady Bulldogs and stand alone in third place in the SEC at the halfway point of its 14-game schedule.
Vanderbilt’s defensive intensity stifled Georgia (16-6, 3-4 SEC) throughout the game.
The Commodores held the Lady Bulldogs to 8-for-27 shooting in the first half, including 0-for-10 from three-point range, to take a 32-23 lead after 20 minutes.
Georgia took a brief lead at 44-43 with 8:13 to play but went eight minutes between field goals and seven minutes without a point.
Jennifer Risper knocked down three free throws in the final minute to end the Lady Bulldogs’ rally.
Georgia finished the day 3-for-19 from three-point range. In the last four games, Vanderbilt has held its opponents to a combined 8-of-62 from long distance (12.9%).
Risper turned in another stellar performance for the Commodores, contributing 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Hannah Tuomi also tallied six points and six rebounds.
Tasha Humphrey led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 1:29 to play. Ashley Houts scored 13.
The road win was the second in four days for Vanderbilt after the Commodores topped Florida 66-56 in Gainesville Thursday.
Georgia suffered its third straight defeat, only the third three-game losing streak in Andy Landers’ 30 years as head coach.
