NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 22nd-ranked Commodore women’s basketball team opens its title defense at the 2008 Southeastern Conference Tournament on Friday, March 7, at the Sommet Center.
Third-seeded Vanderbilt (22-7, 11-3 SEC) will take on sixth-seeded Auburn in Friday’s fourth game, scheduled to tip-off at 9 p.m. CT.
The Commodores are seeded third for the second straight year after capturing their fifth SEC Tournament championship in 2007. Vanderbilt defeated Florida, Georgia and LSU in a three-day span before cutting the nets down in Duluth, Ga.
This year, the tournament returns to Nashville’s downtown arena — the Sommet Center — located just one mile from Vanderbilt’s campus. It marks the third time the women’s tournament has visited Nashville, with Vanderbilt winning both championships in 2002 and 2004.
The Commodores registered a 17-point road win over Auburn just last week. Jessica Mooney and Merideth Marsh each scored 19 points to lead Vanderbilt to a 73-56 victory.
The SEC Tournament continues through the weekend, with the semifinals scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the championship game slated for 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
