Washington Named to Miller Award Preseason Watchlist

The senior becomes the first Commodore to be considered for the Cheryl Miller Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Wednesday that Vanderbilt women’s basketball senior Sacha Washington has been named to the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award preseason watchlist.

Washington becomes the first Commodore to be considered for the Cheryl Miller Award, which goes to the nation’s top small forward. The senior is among 20 players on the 2024-25 Miller Award preseason watchlist.

The Lawrenceville, Georgia, native had a career year in 2023-24, as she averaged a personal-best 12.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She shot 52.6 percent from the floor, had a team-best 44 blocks, and started in all 33 contests. The 6-2 forward scored double-digits in 18 games, which included a career-high 33 points against Louisiana Tech. She pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 10 contests and had nine double-doubles last season.

Washington comes into the 2024-25 season as one of two SEC players who have collected over 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, and 100 blocks in their career, joined by Ole Miss’ Madison Scott. Washington became the 41st Commodore to score 1,000 career points during Vanderbilt’s NCAA Tournament run last season. She comes into the year having amassed 1,008 points, 720 rebounds, 108 blocks, and 105 assists in 99 career games.

The Cheryl Miller Award is named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer. In its eighth year, the annual award recognizes the top small forwards in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds starting Friday, Nov. 1. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just five. In March the five finalists will be presented to Miller and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2025 Cheryl Miller Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Women’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Award (Point Guard), Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (Shooting Guard), Katrina McClain Award (Power Forward), and the Lisa Leslie Award (Center), in addition to the Men’s Starting Five.
