CHARLESTON, S.C. – Veteran Chris Brady and newcomer Jacqui Concolino led a second round Vanderbilt rally to help the Commodores climb into the top tier at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic Sunday.

Brady, a pre-season second team All-American, came roaring back from a opening 80 to fire a four under par 68 second round while Concolino, making her college debut, added a second round 70 for Vanderbilt.

The Commodores are in a fourth place tie with Auburn in the 17-team field after the 36 opening holes.  Both teams are 16-over par with Tennessee the team leader at plus-five. Nicole Smith of Tennessee shot rounds of 71-71 for the individual lead.

The tournament was supposed to begin Monday and conclude Tuesday but a hurricane threatening the southeastern coastline prompted event officials to move the tournament up one day.

“We were planning to have a practice round today until the weather forced a change,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “Because of that we played the first round blindly and there is some real quirkiness to this course, especially in its greens.  We played much better, more confidently, in our second round once we understood the course a bit better.

Vanderbilt opened its first 18 holes with encouraging three-over par 75 efforts from sophomore Liebelei Lawrence and freshman Amber Lundskog.  Another freshman, Jacqui Concolino, added a 77 but veterans Kristen Svicarovich (79) and all-SEC performer Brady (80) couldn’t catch fire.

“Chris didn’t really play badly her first round,” Freitag continued, “but rather she put herself into the wrong spots on several greens which gave her very difficult putting challenges.  Her second round she was more confident and it showed.”

That ended with the start of the second round as Brady, a junior with four medalist finishes under her belt, began on No. 10 with birdie and added birdies at 12, 15, 17 and No. 1 against a lone bogey on the par 5 18th.

Concolino also began on hole 10 and quickly double-bogeyed the11th.  However, a pair of birdies brought her to even at the turn and two more birdies gave her the two-under 70.

Freitag noted that Lawrence holed an 8-iron for an eagle on the par 4 fifth hole.  It was Lawrence’s first eagle on a par four, although she owns a hole-in-one on a par three.

Despite the possible severe weather a few days away, the weather Sunday was fine with breezy conditions. The tournament concludes Monday with 18 holes.  Live scoring and complete results can be found on golfstat.com
