INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Vanderbilt University will serve as a host institution for the first and second rounds of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee announced Tuesday. The games will be played on campus at Memorial Gymnasium and will take place either Saturday, March 17 and Monday, March 19 or Sunday March 18 and Tuesday, March 20.
“We are pleased to help bring such a quality sporting event to Nashville and Memorial Gymnasium,” Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams said. “Hosting these rounds will spotlight our program and give Middle Tennessee sports fans the opportunity to see the NCAA Tournament up close. We look forward to it.”
This is the 11th time Vanderbilt will have hosted the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship at Memorial Gymnasium, and the first time since 2006. In 2006, the Commodores were the No. 8 seed and defeated ninth-seeded Louisville before losing to No. 1 seed North Carolina in the second round. Vanderbilt is 15-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament games played at Memorial Gym. If the Commodores are selected to play in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, they will be guaranteed to play at Memorial Gym.
Nashville is one of 16 host sites for first and second round games in 2012. Also selected as host locations were Ames, Iowa, Baton Rouge, La., Bowling Green, Ohio, Bridgeport, Conn., Chapel Hill, N.C., Chicago, College Park, Md., College Station, Texas, Little Rock, Ark., Norfolk, Va., Norman, Okla., Notre Dame, Ind., Spokane, Wash., Tallahassee, Fla. and West Lafayette, Ind.
The NCAA also announced on Tuesday that Des Moines, Iowa, Fresno, Calif., Kingston, R.I. and Raleigh, N.C. will serve as regional sites for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.
The 2012 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament will also be held in Nashville March 1-4 at Bridgestone Arena.
Tuesday’s announcement adds to a growing list of upcoming SEC Tournaments and NCAA Tournament games that will be held in Nashville.
