Sophomore Irina Gabasa fired a three-under par, 68, and two of her teammates shot an even-par, 71, to vault the Commodores into first place after two rounds of play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. Vanderbilt has a two-round total of 578 (296-282) and has a three-stroke lead on second-place LSU heading into the final round Sunday at Long Cove Club.

Vanderbilt’s 282 on Saturday is a tournament low.

Gabasa was steady throughout the day, registering four birdies, including three in her last five holes, 13 pars, and only one bogey in route to her 68 Saturday. Gabasa’s hot play was contagious with her teammates, as Kendall Martindale and Jenny Hahn carded a pair of even-par 71’s, and Rene Sobolewski rebounded from a tough Friday with a one-over par, 72. Lauren Stratton shot a 78 in her round at Long Cove Saturday.

Gabasa’s 68 shot her up to third place on the individual leader board with a 143 (75-68), and Martindale is a stroke back of her teammate in a tie for fourth with a 144 (73-71). Hahn moved up 16 places on Saturday to a tie for 11th and has a score of 146 (75-71) heading into Sunday. Stratton is in a tie for 35th with a total of 151 (73-78), and Sobolewski is in a tie for 56th with a 158 (86-72).

“That was a lot of fun and a really solid team effort,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Once again, they looked very comfortable out there. I couldn’t be happier for Irina and the round she put together. What a way to close the round making birdie on three of her last five holes. Jenny and Kendall played really well and I’m so proud of the way Rene bounced back. This team has put themselves in another great position and I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Individually, Madalene Sagstrom of LSU is atop the leader board with a four-under par, 138. She leads second-place Noemi Jimenez of Arizona State by three strokes.

The Commodores will tee in a shotgun start at 9:30 ET, and will be paired with LSU and Alabama.
